From the 1200’s and leading up to the union of the two kingdoms in 1603, it is generally true to say that the Border Irvings & Irvines often allied themselves closely with the Johnstons, Scotts, Elliots, Armstrongs, Carlyles and Grahams.
Although, when the national situation was more stable, it could also be true to say that individual feuds flared up between each one of these Clans and the Irvings did their best to stir up much trouble on both sides of the Border.
